Performance & Record

  • World Record Flight :

    • On November 10, 2005, a 777-200LR flew from Hong Kong to London (Eastward) — 21,602 km (11,664 nautical miles) in 22 hours and 42 minutes — the longest nonstop commercial flight in history at that time.

  • ETOPS Certified :
Like all 777s, it is certified for long overwater flights with only two engines (ETOPS-330 and beyond).

Market Use & Role

  • Designed for ultra-long-haul routes, especially for airlines operating routes like:

    • Doha–Los Angeles

    • Dubai–Houston

    • Toronto–Sydney (via Vancouver)

  • Ideal for thinner ultra-long-range routes, where larger aircraft like the A380 or 747 would be uneconomical.

Operators

Used by a select number of airlines due to its specific niche:

  • Qatar Airways

  • Delta Air Lines

  • Emirates

  • Pakistan International Airlines (PIA)

  • Turkmenistan Airlines

Drawbacks & Limitations

Issue Explanation
Limited Demand Few airlines need ultra-long-range aircraft with this capacity
Fuel Burn Though efficient, still high operating cost over very long routes
Mostly Replaced by 787-9/10 & A350-900ULR Newer twinjets offer similar range with lower costs
